A body was found in Fresh Pond, according to a statement from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Cambridge Police Department.

An investigation is under way. The statement said “preliminary indications are that the body appears to have been in the water for an extended period of time.”
Fresh Pond is a reservoir for Cambridge, but city spokesman Jeremy Warnick said residents did not need to feel concerned about it as a potential threat to city drinking water. Water from the pond must go through Cambridge’s Water Treatment plant before it reaches taps.

Fresh Pond, which holds about 1.5 billion gallons of water, is part of a broader system where water flows from Stony Brook watershed.
In 2014, the body of an Arlington man was discovered in Fresh Pond four months after he was reported missing. A cause of death was not determined.
Police said information on the body would be provided as it becomes available.
