The body found in Fresh Pond Aug. 11 was that of a 41-year-old man who was “known to be in the area,” according to a statement released Friday by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office and Cambridge Police Department.

The statement said that on Aug. 11 state and local police responded shortly after noon to the report of a body in the water, and that Cambridge Fire Department also responded and removed the body from Fresh Pond.

A cause of death was not released, but the statement said a preliminary investigation “did not indicate any obvious trauma to the body and there is no foul play suspected at this time.”

Previously, investigators had said the body appeared to have been “in the water for an extended period of time.” While Fresh Pond is a reservoir for Cambridge, the city’s drinking water would not be affected by a body because water from the pond is treated at Cambridge’s Water Treatment plant before being made available to residents.

Fresh Pond, which holds about 1.5 billion gallons of water, is part of a broader system where water flows from Stony Brook watershed.

In 2014, the body of an Arlington man was discovered in Fresh Pond four months after he was reported missing. A cause of death was not determined.
