After years of operating separately despite closely intertwined missions, Cambridge Volunteers is merging with Cambridge Nonprofit Coalition to provide services as a unified organization, the groups shared in a Tuesday press release. The organizations support nonprofit leaders and volunteers as well as residents and the city government.

As part of the merger, Laurie Rothstein, executive director of Cambridge Volunteers, will retire, though she will be involved in the transitional work. “I couldn’t ask for a better home for the people and organizations I’ve spent the last decade serving,” she said in the press release. Cambridge Volunteers recruits people willing to give their time and maintains a database of those it enlists, “which directly facilitates more than 500 placements annually” with organizations that serve Cambridge.

Cambridge Nonprofit Coalition (CNC) is a network of approximately 100 organizations, offering resources and professional development for local nonprofits and their leaders. CNC Executive Director Elena Sokolow-Kaufman said in an email to Cambridge Day that the merger “is us practicing what we preach, that by working in partnership we will accomplish more than what we could ever do alone.” She added that “We believe cooperation between nonprofits makes them stronger, opens up new opportunities and helps us all do our work more effectively.”

The two organizations will continue to operate separate websites and event calendars at this stage in the transition process, with updates to be shared as efforts progress.
