A person armed with a knife or machete is being sought by police in the area of Mount Auburn and Brattle streets after an aggravated assault and battery.

The Harvard Police Department issued an emergency alert before 10 a.m. Tuesday saying the incident occurred near 124 Mount Auburn Street, and asking people in the vicinity to shelter in place.

The department said its officers along with Cambridge Police and Massachusetts State Police are searching the area for the individual.
